Are You Indispensable?

Encourager-In-Chief: July 7th, 2021

How to increase your value to an employer

I recently wrote a blog about becoming indispensable. I know that some people think being indispensable is a bad thing, and to some degree, I concur. However, I believe we can all agree that the more value you can add to an organization, the more valuable you become to it.

So, how does one go about adding value to an organization? There are endless ways to do this. First and foremost, strive to add clarity wherever you see disorganization and confusion. Communication is one of the most valuable skills in any business. Work on improving your written and verbal communication skills to make sure that anyone with whom you communicate always understands exactly what you mean. This will help reduce hurt feelings, misunderstandings, emotional outbursts, confusion, and financial waste.

Second, never put your own needs ahead of your customers or your coworkers. Becoming an others-centered individual will gain you support for your ideas and encouragement to take bigger risks. Become a people builder by going out of your way to help others — especially when they’re struggling. You have no idea how much this is going to help you further down the line in your career.

Third, always strive to earn people’s trust. This means keeping confidential information confidential. People are going to test you to see if you are trustworthy. I once worked in an organization where the president deliberately gave out different, confidential information to each of his executives because he wanted to find out whom he could trust and who would leak the information. When others know that they can talk to you in confidence and that you will honor their privacy, you will be given greater responsibilities and authority to make decisions.

And fourth, practice humility. It’s not unusual for some people who become more successful to let it go to their head. But staying humble as you advance will only add to your support and inspire others to not only help you, but to become more like you.

Let me hear from you.

If your presence doesn’t add value, your absence won’t make a difference.
