When You Fall, Pick Yourself Up

Dealing with setbacks

If you are an entrepreneur, you understand that taking risks comes with the territory. In fact, without risk, there is no opportunity. However, when we take risks, we may suffer failures and setbacks. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take them.

In 2014, I decided to go out on my own and run my seminar and coaching business under my own brand. At the time, I had 13 years of momentum on my side, plus an established client base, a well- recognized service, and a slew of paying sponsors. However, that did not prepare me for having my largest customer cancel all of its employee seminars and coaching commitments less than three months after I opened my own business. Although I had tried to anticipate just about anything, I must admit, I did not anticipate that. It threw me into a tailspin and took me quite a while to recover.

Of course, that wasn’t the only setback. In fact, there were so many, I can’t even remember them all. But just because things don’t always go smoothly, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take risks. Losing that valuable client forced me to get out of my comfort zone and go find some new ones — which I did. In fact, some of the new ones became even bigger customers than the one I originally lost.

After a three-years absence, that original client came back and began signing up for more seminars. They also became valuable television series sponsors and paying guests on the TV show. I’ll be the first to admit that it was a very scary learning experience. What I learned from it was that you never want to count on one customer for your success. You always need to be on the hunt for new customers who may be a better match for you. No matter what happens, remember that the risks you face will create opportunities for you to grow and gain greater experience as a business owner.

When your goal is to gain experience, perspective, and knowledge, failure is no longer a possibility.
