Don’t Be Haunted By Your Past.

Encourager-In-Chief: May 19th, 2021

Getting past your past.

I’ve noticed that most of my confessions in recent years are of things I’m remembering from my past that I can’t remember ever bringing up before. I believe this is a natural process of aging, but if it’s something that’s causing you distress, it’s time to address it.

All of us have memories of actions we took in the past that we cannot undo now. Nobody lives a perfect life. It’s normal to wish we could undo the hurt we caused somebody else, but that’s not how that works. What we need to do is come to terms with our past and leave it where it belongs.

There are many areas of regret, but one that seems to be common to many people is having a falling out with someone with whom you were once very close. If the person is still living, you still have a chance to make things right. Don’t worry about if the person will reciprocate. That’s not important. What’s important is that you take action and proactively apologize to the person. If this person will not take your phone calls, write him or her a letter and state your feelings.

There are many advantages to writing somebody a sincere note. It demonstrates your genuine desire to solve the problem. It shows that you’ve put some time and thought into the action. It’s rare; very few people take the time to do it anymore. It’s memorable and very moving. It can have a profound effect on melting some of the hardest hearts.

And even if the person does not forgive you, be at peace with yourself knowing that you’ve done everything you can to make things right. You will finally be able to leave your guilt in the past.

Let me hear from you.

Hope is seeing light despite being surrounded by darkness.
