Simple Ways To Make Your Marketing Pay Off

Many entrepreneurs dread having to sell their own products or services. When this happens, they often turn to marketing. The problem is that most entrepreneurs do not have the first idea how to make their marketing payoff. Here are some simple tips that will help you spend your marketing budget more wisely.

First, understand what marketing is designed to do. Marketing helps you position your product in the minds of your customers so that they understand what benefits they will derive from it. In other words, “Why will it be worth buying?” Second, they need to understand the value of what you sell. Do not assume that they already know this. Most prospects don’t and they will not know unless you make it crystal clear.

Marketing very rarely works instantaneously. That’s why repetition is so important. Billboard advertising is based on the number of impressions — the number of times a prospect is going to see the same message before acting upon it. People don’t normally pull over on the side of the road when they see an ad on a billboard; however, if they see it often enough, it just might stay in their mind long enough to remember it when they actually have a need for that product.

Television marketing works a little differently. There are several benefits you get from advertising or sponsoring. First, you gain an affiliation with the program for business. If it’s a show people like, they’re more likely to trust you when they buy. Second, you align yourself with the cause for which the program or organization stands. If you represent a cause, people who support that cause are more likely to buy from you. Third, it creates awareness and identification of your product with your target audience. If you watch the television show Judge Judy, you’re going to see a lot of law firms advertising on that program. It doesn’t necessarily guarantee that people will call them, but they will more likely remember those firms if they’ve seen their ads in the past.

Of course, the most important thing about marketing is to make sure that it’s profitable. Most business owners don’t bother to track the results and, therefore, never know if their marketing is paying off. If you are using an ad, make sure you have a way to track the results from the ad. This will allow you to divide the total number of sales derived from that ad by the cost of the ad. This will give you a direct return on investment and make it much easier for you to make your marketing pay off.

By the way, marketing is no replacement for actual selling. You must do both. The better job you do on your marketing, the easier it will be to sell.
