Worthwhile Credo #9
Persistence is more powerful than technology.
A few years ago, I was coaching a man who had just started up his own coaching and consulting business. He was light years ahead of me in technology. He was very savvy in social media and regularly did podcasts and webinars to promote his business. Unfortunately, what he didn’t do was follow up in an attentive manner when people called. As result, he ended up closing his business about three and half years after he opened it and went back to working for someone else.
Do you get a lot of “robo calls” soliciting you on your phone these days? Let me ask you a question: How often have you bought anything from somebody who calls you like this? We are now being deluged by these calls because technology allows machines to dial 50 numbers at one time and just respond to the first person who answers. This shotgun method may reach more people but it’s unlikely that it’s going to result in many happy customers.
Because of these devices, we must work even harder to actually speak with those people with whom you want to do business. A few years ago, I was trying to reach one of the principles in a very prestigious law firm. I was approaching him to find out if he would be interested in sponsoring the Focused on Success with Dave Romeo television series. After leaving him several messages without ever speaking to him, he finally called me back. He said he had been in Europe but had to call me back because I had left so many polite messages that he wanted to find out what I wanted.
Just remember that the more technology encroaches into our lives, the more people will appreciate speaking to a genuine real person who cares about helping them achieve their goals and meet their needs. By the way, that attorney did become a television sponsor — after a year of phone calls. Never underestimate the power of persistence.
Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.- Calvin Coolidge
