Let goals set you free.

Write them down and check them off.

There is a famous story about a bunch of graduates from a large university who met for a reunion 20 years after the graduation. One of the questions they were asked was if they wrote their goals down. Only 3% of the graduating class admitted that they had written their goals down when they graduated. However, the 3% who had written their goals down had accomplished more than the 97% who didn’t write their goals down — combined. This story illustrates an important point. Everyone can write down their goals but very few people actually do. Do you?

Whenever I start working with a new coaching client, one of the first things we do is work on how they can write their goals down. It’s not hard to do. All it takes to get started is a piece of paper or, in my case, an index card. Something happens when you commit your goals to pen and paper. They start to become real and your commitment grows exponentially.

Of course, you do actually have to complete your goals for this to have any significance. That’s why it’s important for you to check off your goals as you complete them. Of course, everyone is different but, in my case, completing my goals makes me euphoric — especially when the last one is checked off and I can head off to Staples to have another 300 goals laminated and added to my ever-growing list of completed goals.

I’m challenging you to start writing down your goals. It doesn’t matter how many you start with. I only started with five. However, since 2006, I’ve successfully written down and completed 300 goals per year. Surprisingly, 300 goals are not harder to do than 200 goals or 100 goals. In fact, it gets even easier because repetition is the mother of skill. Give it a try and change your life. Wouldn’t it be nice to finish in the top 3% of all successful people?

If you don’t have a plan for your life, you are destined to fit into somebody else’s plan for your life.
