Get moving on your goals!

Encourager-In-Chief: February 5th, 2020

It’s not too late to start today.

Most people know how important it is to write their goals down. Of course, that doesn’t mean that they do it. Most people make New Year’s resolutions on December 31, but never really think about them until the following New Year’s Eve. The thing about writing down your goals is, it’s easy to do and it’s easy not to do. As John Maxwell said, “You will never change your life until you change something that you do daily.” I’m challenging you to make a daily change and start writing down your goals and checking them off. Actually, you only have to write your goals down once a year and work on them every day until they’re complete.

I used to think that once I taught people to write their goals down and they started this habit, they would do it for the rest of their lives. But I’ve since learned I was wrong about that. Years ago, one of my best coaching clients wanted to go on a second honeymoon to Hawaii with her husband. Her company was offering a Hawaiian vacation for two to any of their sales people who hit their goals. This woman was so focused on achieving her goals that every time I saw her she knew exactly where she was and she was right on track all year long. She used an image of Hawaii as her screensaver and she taped a picture of Hawaii on the top of her desk. At the end of the year, she hit her goal and she and her husband took their second honeymoon in Hawaii.

Ironically, a year went by, and she called me, saying she needed my coaching again. She said that she never wrote her goals down for the following year. She didn’t know when to start and so an entire year slipped by without her writing down her goals for achieving what she wanted. Remember, this is someone who already knew enough to write her goals down, had written her goals down in the past, and checked off her completed goals just one year earlier.

If you want to design your destiny, you must take steps to create your own compelling future. That’s going to require you to write down your goals so you can check them off. If you need a coach, get a coach, but don’t waste an entire year getting started. Take action today and celebrate next New Year’s Eve.

It’s never too late to be what you might have been.
