To change your results, change your actions…

Encourager-In-Chief: January 1st, 2020

One of the cornerstones of the Sales Academy program is understanding the cause and effect relationship between actions and results. To put it simply, in sales and in business, there are only two tracking tools for knowing how you are doing: The actions you take and the results you get. Therefore, if you don’t like the results you are currently getting, your only recourse is to change your actions.

Frequently, we get stuck in a rut. We continue to go down the same path even after we’ve realized that we are not getting the same positive results we’d gotten in the past. Perhaps it’s arrogance — and I’m certainly guilty of it myself — but we need to discipline ourselves to say, “Enough is enough!” A former business associate of mine used to have a saying that went, “When you find yourself in a hole, put down the shovel.”

Another reason why we delay changing our actions is because just changing them does not guarantee success. We may be looking at some significant time invested in trial and error. But just as Thomas Edison tried more than 10,000 times before discovering how to invent the electric lightbulb, we need to recognize that even our failed attempts will teach us something.

Your willingness to try something different is a point of differentiation between you and most of your competitors. Don’t be afraid to distance yourself from the pack. Be willing to change your actions when you want to get better results than your current efforts. Pay attention not only to what works, but, more importantly, why it works. That’s how you break a downward spiral.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
