Why isn’t my networking working?

The difference between networking and selling.

Frequently when I go to a mixer, I can identify two different groups of people. One group is there to sell what they do to everyone else. The other group is there to network. Newsflash: When you go to a networking function, you’re supposed to be networking, not selling!

So what is the difference? It’s very easy. Selling is the act of trying to generate business for yourself. Networking is the act of trying to generate business for others.

If you go to a mixer and all you do is try to sell to everyone you meet, you are likely to not only leave with zero sales, but also zero credibility. People will assume that you do not know what you’re doing. What’s worse is you’ll have destroyed your one and only chance to make a perfect first impression. It’s considered bad form to do a hard sell on people you’ve just met. At best, you’ll be considered a rookie and at worst, you’ll be considered rude and self-centered.

So what should you be doing? Put other people’s needs ahead of your own. Listen intently and respectfully to other people and you’ll be amazed at just what you will learn about them. Once you’ve picked up a little bit of information, go out of your way to introduce this person to someone else you think who may have an interest in learning what the person does. Act like the host even if it’s not your event. People will see you as a valuable networking contact and possibly even a friend.

Remember, everybody likes to buy, but nobody likes to be sold. It’s better to give than to receive. So go to your mixers with the intent of finding people you believe will be a good match for introduction to the other people within your sphere of influence. Do this well and the sales will follow.
The more effort you put into growing other people’s business, the more you will get for yourself.
