7 Keys To Selecting A Coach

Use this as your checklist.

Selecting a coach is like selecting a doctor. There are plenty of them and most of them are qualified, but you want to make sure the one you use is the right one for you. Here are seven ways to make sure you’re picking the right coach.

First and foremost, look at the results they get for their clients. Any coach worth his or her salt will be able to tell you specifically and measurably the positive impact they have made in their clients' lives.

Second, does this coach have credibility? Evaluate everything you can upfront, just like you would on a blind date. How do how does he or she comes across to you? Does this person appear professional? Can they answer questions a coach should know? Are they reachable by phone when you call? Can you meet with the coach before you make a commitment?

Third, evaluate the coach’s staying power. How long has the coach been a coach? Because the barrier to entry to becoming a coach is very low, anyone can plunk down some money and pay for certification to say he or she is a coach. However, coaching is not a necessity. People will not spend hundreds or thousands of dollars an hour on a coach unless they are seeing positive results. That means that most coaches will not be able to stay in business long if they are not delivering value. Knowing how long a coach has been in business is an important factor in your decision-making.

Fourth, ask to see either written or video testimonials. Most reputable coaches will have some available on their website. Don’t be afraid to talk to people who are currently clients of the coach you are considering.

Fifth, how accountable is your coach? The coach should hold you accountable in order to be effective. However, you should also be able to hold your coach accountable for helping you achieve the results you want.

Sixth, does your coach offer a guarantee? I tell all of my clients that all of my work is 100% satisfaction guaranteed. If the coach you are considering is not willing to do this, move on to one who will.

Finally, does your coach list a physical mailing address on his or her website? If not, this should be a red flag that you are not dealing with a reputable and committed coach.
