#3: Failing to say, “no”.

Today, we continue a 10-week series to give you back more time in your day. Let’s face it; entrepreneurs never have enough time to do everything they need to do. That’s all the more reason to start today with the easiest way for you to get your time back.

I now offer an entire seminar entitled “The Fine Art of Saying "No!’” It’s for people who have not learned how and when to master this simple, two-letter word that can save you enormous amounts of time. Don’t get me wrong: You should not be saying “no” to things you should be saying “yes”, however, you will rarely ever get to those things if you keep saying “yes” to the wrong things.

Lots of people say “yes” because they don’t want to hurt somebody’s feelings. Frequently, they overextend themselves, feel bad, and let themselves (and other people) down. If you’re not going to fully commit to something, then don’t commit to it at all.

It will help if you decide, up front, what things about which you are most passionate. It will also help you decide what you’re going to say when somebody asks you something and you know the correct answer for you is “no”. One of my most common statements is, “my time is not my own”. Another one is, “this is not a cause I feel passionate about”. You might also try saying, “my path lies elsewhere”.

I hope you’ll practice saying “no” more often, but not make it an automatic reflex. There are plenty of worthy causes that deserve your time and attention. You need to be a good steward of your time and decisions, so practice perfecting both.

Things, not worth doing, are not worth doing well.
