#8: Failing to preplan your day

Today, we continue a 10-week series to give you back more time in your day. Let’s face it; entrepreneurs never have enough time to do everything they need to do. That’s all the more reason to start today with the easiest way for you to get your time back.

Even if you are a sole proprietor, you are still responsible for how effectively you plan your time. Avoid falling into the classic trap of starting off your day deciding what you want to accomplish. If you’re doing this now, you’re already behind the eight ball. Don’t waste the most valuable time of your day -- the first hour. You need to start pre-planning your day the day before.

All things considered, I recommend that you start planning for tomorrow at 4 PM today. Hopefully, you’ve already made all your most important phone calls by 4 PM. Take this time to make a to-do list for the phone calls and activities that you want to accomplish tomorrow. You’ll be amazed how quickly this can get done.

There’s another benefit to you for doing this: You’ll sleep better. It’s no secret that many entrepreneurs suffer from insomnia. The primary reason why entrepreneurs have trouble sleeping is because they’re constantly worrying about everything that has to get done and where the money is going to come from. However, if you pre-plan your day and know that you have a list waiting for you when you are most productive, there’s a greater likelihood that you will accomplish more and make more money.

For every moment of planning, you will save five times that amount in the execution of phone calls and tasks. It’s one of the greatest returns on investment you’ll ever receive and you can use it starting tomorrow.

The first hour is the rudder of the day.
