Is Your Word Your Bond?

Encourager-In-Chief: April 11th, 2018

Become a leader with integrity.

Recently, I noticed that an organization of which I’ve been a member for almost 20 years decided to contract with one of my competitors, using the name of one of my most popular programs. After contacting the organization, the woman in charge explained that she had only been there a few months, that she didn’t realize that I had the name first, and wasn’t sure what she should do. She said she would check with somebody else and get back to me. After not hearing back right away, I sent a cease-and-desist request to the organization, explaining that they were infringing on approximately $100,000 worth of my revenue.

Instead of agreeing to change the name, they decided to modify it by adding a subtitle to it. The reasoning was that, in their opinion, the name was too generic and they had already printed up their literature. Let’s look at what’s happened here.

All human beings make mistakes. Had the woman just said, “I apologize. I was unaware of it and I’ll fix it,” that would’ve been the end of it. Instead, pride, arrogance, apathy, and greed determined the decision.

One hundred years ago, people did business with a handshake. Your word was your bond. Something has changed drastically in our society. It’s a lack of integrity. Fortunately, this can work to your advantage. The harder it is to find integrity, the more appreciative your clients, friends, family, and neighbors will be when you keep your word.

What is your word worth? Do you have the courage to become a leader with integrity? If you do, I promise you will be tested. However, it is the testing that will define your character and how you will be remembered. I challenge you to always have the courage to win with integrity.

When you have integrity, nothing else matters. When you don’t have integrity, nothing else matters.
