Don’t Miss the Lesson Even if You Miss the Sale

Mistakes can be valuable.

Nobody likes to lose, especially me. However, I’ve learned the hard way that even a negative experience can teach you some of life’s most important lessons. This is especially true in business and specifically, with customers.

I recently lost a new customer because I was unsuccessful in earning his trust. I take full responsibility for falling short. However, though I didn’t get his business, I did get a very important reminder of about making sure that you do everything right with new customers from day one. It’s very easy to get careless and skip steps when business comes to us unexpectedly easy. While it may not happen every day, it will happen sooner or later. Don’t allow your good fortune to detract you or take your eye off the ball. Pay great attention to detail every step of the way.

Customers are constantly evaluating you to determine whether or not they have made the right decision. Trust must be earned and more importantly, re-earned, on every possible occasion. While it’s possible to do too little for a customer, it’s almost never impossible to do too much for a customer.

Whatever you have a setback, take a deep breath and reflect on what valuable lesson you can glean from the experience. And while you’ll probably make most of your mistakes when you’re getting started, you will discover, just as I have, that there are still new lessons to be learned 19 years later.

With this new customer, it cost me $1,000. However, that’s a small price to pay for the very important business lesson. The key to your success is making sure that once you learn this lesson, you’ll never spend another dime to learn the same one again.
